What to do if you have trouble with teeth: a quick guide

Teeth can fail at the most unexpected moment, and it’s important to know what to do to prevent the problem from getting worse.

Knocked out a tooth?

• Find the tooth and grasp it by the tip (the part visible in your mouth), not the root!
• Don’t wash the tooth under water.
• Place the tooth in a glass of milk or saline solution (available at the pharmacy).
• Run to the dentist! The sooner you do, the better the chance of the tooth being implanted.

Do you have a severe toothache?

• Don’t just swallow painkillers; consult a doctor!
• Apply something cold to your cheek to relieve swelling and pain.
• See a dentist immediately! Pain is a sign that something is wrong (infection, decay, injury). Delaying it will only make it worse.

Broken tooth?

• Try to find and save the broken tooth.
• Don’t chew with the broken tooth!
• Put a cold compress on your cheek.
• Don’t glue the tooth yourself!
• See a dentist; they’ll decide what to do (filling, crown, or something else).

Are your gums inflamed or have an abscess?

• If your gums are swollen, red, or draining pus, see a doctor immediately!
• Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help relieve the pain, but this is not a cure!
